Craftsy,
a relative newcomer to the business of online craft classes, is already
a giant in the field, having racked up 1 million registered users since
its start last summer. The Denver company's lighthearted website - one
page features a Chihuahua decked out in tiny scarf and matching leg
warmers - lists more than 100 courses and workshops.
Craftsy
provides classes for beginners and advanced hobbyists in cake
decorating, quilting, sewing, beadwork and more. Class enrollment is up

supplies shop, more than seven years ago. While that site provides
dozens of free sewing tutorials, Link also will be teaching two classes
for Craftsy.

moderates the discussion. She recently hosted a free live class
featuring artists and their favorite craft tools, for which 800 people
signed up from around the world, she says.
"It's more of an online party," says Lee. "We have a really good time."

features crafts such as weaving and scrapbooking, and also hits upon
the fine arts, including oil painting, watercolors and sculpture.
Classes range from 30 to 90 minutes, and cost $15 to $75, according to
David Pyle, chief executive officer of CraftArtEdu.
Instructors
featured on the 2-year-old company's website use short video clips,
written tutorials, step-by-step photographs and voiceovers. Students can

Shad Resurgence Marks a Cleaner Delaware River
American shad were once so common that East Coast rivers were
described as being “black” and “boiling” as tens of millions of fish
migrated upstream each spring to spawn. Today, approximately 98 percent
of the fish that formed a staple of the Colonial diet have been
depleted. In rivers once teeming with shad, a daily catch is sometimes
counted in the single digits.
“One day you’re going to catch 60 shad and the next day you’re catching none,” said Middlesex resident Andy Still. A catch-and-release fisherman, Still is one of 70,000 recreational anglers who annually fish the Delaware River, by far the most popular source for shad in New Jersey.
Still's observation helps explain why the public officials who oversee the Mid-Atlantic fisheries are intensifying their efforts to restore the shad population. In New Jersey, they're working in tandem with environmentalists who hope to rehabilitate not just shad, but the network of rivers, bays, streams, and marshes that make up this region's watershed.
Shad -- the name comes from the Latin, Alosa sapidissima, meaning "most delicious, or savory, herring” -- are just one part of this larger effort, but a critical part. The fish is considered a marker for the overall health of the rivers and tributaries that flow into the Atlantic Ocean. As the shad population increases, the presence of other aquatic life increases as well. It's an elegantly simple equation: more shad equals cleaner water, cleaner water equals more shad.
This year, several federal and collaborative state agencies are advancing policies to protect shad fisheries. On January 1, 2013, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) will enact a moratorium on shad fishing in New Jersey waters until the state can prove the population has reached sustainable levels.
The Delaware River has already established its sustainability and is thus exempt from the moratorium.
Sometime in the next several months, the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council (MAFMC), a federal body charged with establishing ocean management protocols from New York to North Carolina, will begin studies and public hearings on whether to impose limits on the amount of shad -- and river herring, another migratory fish -- that can be inadvertently caught and killed while trawlers are fishing for other species.
These potential restrictions come as the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and its civilian environmental-advocacy partners are celebrating the removal of fish-blocking dams from rivers and furthering the cleanup of contaminated waters and banks that are, for the first time in a century, welcoming fishing and recreational use.
Despite the resurgence of shad in the Delaware River, their numbers are not expected to reach pre-20th century levels, when the Delaware supported 25 million to 50 million shad. From its peak in 1899, the population dropped to almost zero between 1950 and 1955. River cleanup efforts and a hurricane in 1955 helped the population begin to climb. Chilmark selectmen wrestle with library parking shortage
Chilmark selectmen Tuesday gave the green light to a Hollywood film
crew to film in Menemsha this weekend, sank a proposal to purchase a
new pump-out boat, and discussed ongoing parking problems at the town
library.

A letter to selectmen signed by members of the library board of trustees expressed concerns about parking problems for library patrons during the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival Wednesday film series and morning adult classes.
"We field complaints every week from residents and taxpayers who tell us they are frequently unable to get to the library on Wednesdays because every available parking space in town — at the library, Chilmark Community Center, post office, the school and the bank — is taken," the letter said.
Selectman chairman Jonathan Mayhew suggested that either the Community Center change the day of the film festival or the library change its hours.
Ms. Hierta said the library trustees were reluctant to change the hours of operation. "We have been asked to change the library hours. We talked about it, and we don't think it's appropriate for [the film festival] to ask the library to change.Gerresheimer Werkzeugbau Wackersdorf GmbH manufactures special lines and machines for automation technology."
Police Chief Brian Cioffi said he was working on the problem."I have talked to all parties involved and hopefully we can work out a scheduling solution so everybody is happy," he said.

"I think we can solve it if we all get together and talk about it. From my preliminary discussions with involved parties there seems to be a willingness to make this work," he said.
Selectmen then met with Mark Fitzgerald, representing HBO films, who was seeking permission to film in Menemsha this Saturday for four of five hours in the morning.
The film will star Larry David, seasonal Chilmark resident and star of HBO hit 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' and will be about "green cars and trying to get off fossil fuels," Mr.Manufacturer of precision Plastic Mould for cameras, Fitzgerald said.
The filming will not involve a large crew, with no actors other than Mr. David, and all the equipment will be staged in the Home Port parking lot. Mr. Fitzgerald said he already met with business owners to give them a heads-up about the filming.
Selectmen approved the request, but not before reminiscing about the town's previous brushes with Hollywood.
"[The Kevin Costner film] Message in a Bottle wanted to build a house on Vincent beach," selectman Warren Doty recalled. "And they had to go North Carolina to do that."
Selectmen then discussed a request from the board of health asking selectmen to consider buying a pump-out boat.
In a letter dated September 10, administrator Marina Lent states the board of health discussed available options to replace and upgrade the sewage pump-out facility at the town harbor.
"We welcome the opportunity to ensure the more consistent use of boat sewage holding tank pump-outs in the Chilmark harbor, rather than the continued direct dumping of fecal waste at sea, as this will clearly improve the quality of Chilmark coastal waters," the letter said, adding:
"The board of health is interested in exploring the option of a pump-out vessel. Please advise as to whether the Board of Selectmen would be amenable to this option."
In no uncertain terms, selectmen said they did not support purchasing a pump-out boat, and instead preferred to focus on improving a land-based or pier-based pump-out system.
"The one in Vineyard Haven services 150 boats," Mr. Doty said. "We have only 16 transient slips, we are not at the scale to have a pump-out boat. We should have a good pump-out facility – a land-based facility."
Mr. Mayhew agreed the town should focus efforts on improving the pier-based pump-out station already in place.
In other business, selectmen agreed to sign a letter drafted by the town of Tisbury to Gregory Bialecki, state secretary of Housing and Economic Development, in support of an application to the state to build a new connector road from State Road to Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road.
"This project will supply a vital alternative route to the use of the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road intersection, which is desperately needed to reduce traffic congestion...in reducing this traffic congestion, the entire Island benefits," the letter said.
Finally selectmen met with John Ketcham, a seasonal resident of Aquinnah, who asked if the town would consider building a basic exercise center at the Chilmark Community Center.Kitchen Floor tiles comes in stone,
Mr. Ketcham said it would alleviate the need for Chilmark and Aquinnah residents to travel large distances to down-Island workout centers. He said he drives nearly 40 miles round-trip to get to the YMCA in the summer.
Selectmen said they liked the idea, but wondered if the Chilmark Community Center was the best location. Selectmen half-jokingly suggested that a workout center be built off the back of the police station.

"The one in Vineyard Haven services 150 boats," Mr. Doty said. "We have only 16 transient slips, we are not at the scale to have a pump-out boat. We should have a good pump-out facility – a land-based facility."

In other business, selectmen agreed to sign a letter drafted by the town of Tisbury to Gregory Bialecki, state secretary of Housing and Economic Development, in support of an application to the state to build a new connector road from State Road to Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road.
"This project will supply a vital alternative route to the use of the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road intersection, which is desperately needed to reduce traffic congestion...in reducing this traffic congestion, the entire Island benefits," the letter said.

But doctors began revisiting ECMO during the recent flu epidemics to aid patients with severe respiratory failure caused by viral pneumonia, and the results were promising. A German study of 26 patients with respiratory failure using ECMO as a bridge to lung transplants followed, and it showed better outcomes.
"What's rather new is there are ways of putting patients on ECMO support," Ross said. "And there have surfaced case reports of using this on awake patients and having them not only awake, but ambulatory."
Instead of being kept sedated and immobilized as in the past, new ECMO patients are awake, alert and can eat and walk. This is not to say there aren't risks. Patients may still be susceptible to blood-borne infections and internal bleeding, and may require transfusions to replace blood loss due to cells damaged when going through the oxygenator.
For Schmidt and her medical team, the risks were worth it. She was vibrant, young and newly married, so no one wanted to give up on her. With ECMO, Schmidt could eat and walk around the ICU, building up her strength for surgery. The ECMO was removed immediately after her transplant and she was off the ventilator completely within 24 hours.
"It made a dramatic difference in her recovery," Ross said.
Prior to her transplant, Schmidt felt tired all the time and had shortness of breath, as well as some memory problems.
